Council Member Miguel Martinez opposses Senate Bill that would allow The New York City Police Department to fingerprint all unlicensed and licensed street vendors

NYS Senate bill No. S4045 would require the criminal procedure law of fingerprinting of persons charged with violations of certain local laws governing food and general vending.  This law would allow the New York City Police Department to fingerprint all vendors (legal or illegal) who commit a violation.

This bill criminalizes people for trying to make a living.  It is the City that should issue more vending licenses rather than looking at street vendors as criminals.” Said Council Member Miguel Martinez.

As the local representative for a district with many street vendors I oppose this NYS senate bill and call on the City of New York to not criminalize street vendors.” Said Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito.

Currently the New York City Police Department is not allowed to fingerprint legal or illegal street vendors.  When legal or illegal vendors appear before court they face a fine.
